"You are not who you think you are"

The underlining factor behind every work that I've written in the last few years is the quest of rediscovering the secret power that music has. Therefore, many of my works are influenced by texts belonging to ancient or modern mystics, ranging from Lao Tzu and Heraclit to Osho, Eckhart Tolle, Gangaji or Mooji. Lately, the sacred / profane relation has intrigued my musical thinking, and the complementarity of the polar opposites has become the main idea in many of my works, irrespective of the aesthetical orientation, be it avantgardistic or traditional, regardless of the medium used, be it live-electronics or the ancient duduk… Commenting on a piece played during ISCM World Music Days, Frank Oteri from New Music Box was saying “Hommage à Papaji contained some extremely lush harmonies that seemed to float beyond consciousness...”
Professional activity
Born in 1979 in Braşov (Romania), Gabriel Mălăncioiu graduated from “Andrei Saguna” National College from its native town in 1997. Between 1997 and 2002 he followed the courses of the Faculty of Automatics and Computers within the “Politehnica” University of Timişoara, and, in parallel, between 2000 and 2005 he also followed the courses of the Faculty of Music of Timişoara.
In 2001 he began the study of composition under the direction of Remus Georgescu, and in 2005 he began to attend the MA in composition within “Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy of Cluj, under the direction of Cornel Tãranu, PhD, member of the Romanian Academy. In 2011 he completed his PhD in composition with the thesis "Aspects of the sacred / profane relation in my own music" under the direction of Prof. Adrian Pop, PhD within “Gheorghe Dima” Music Academy.
In 2005 he took part in the Icon Arts International Summer Courses, studying composition with Erik Peters (Sweden), Marian Borkowski (Poland) and Doina Rotaru (Romania). In 2008 he attended Summer courses in composition with Aurel Stroe at Buşteni. In 2008 and 2009 he attended Master classes in composition at the International Sommerakademie Prag-Wien-Budapest, studying with Nigel Osborne (Great Britain), Klangforum Wien (Austria) and electronic music with Hans Tutschku (USA). In 2010 he attended composition courses with Gyula Csapó at the International Bartók Festival. In 2011 he was admitted at the Experimental Studio des SWR Academy, Freiburg, Germany, studying with Mark Andre (France), Chaya Czernowin (Israel), Dániel Péter Biró (Hungary / Canada), André Richard (Switzerland) and Brian Ferneyhough (Great Britain). During George Enescu International Festival, he took part in the composition workshop, under the guidance of Miklós Maros (Sweden / Hungary), Bernard Cavanna (France), Hubert Stuppner (Italy) and Zygmunt Krauze (Poland).
His works have been performed in concerts in Romania and also in USA, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Austria, Germany, Denmark, France, Norway, Italy, Greece, Macedonia, Ireland, Slovenia, Ukraine, Scotland, Switzerland, Spain, Poland and Hungary by Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Slovenian Chamber Choir, Ensemble Aventure, Black Pencil, Hand Werk, L’Arsenale, THReNSeMBle, Trio Contraste, Florian Mueller (Klangforum Wien), Bjorn Wilker (Klangforum Wien), Gudrun Hinze, Richard Craig, Bruce Curlette, Gianluca Ruggeri, Luca Piovesan and conductors such as Nigel Osborne, Michael Wendeberg, Francesco Milioto, Filippo Perocco, Huba Hollókői, Martina Batic, Remus Georgescu amongst others. He is member of UCMR - the Romanian Union of Composers, of ISCM - International Society for Contemporary Music, the Romanian Section and of various music organisations such as Vox Novus (USA), La Villa des Compositeurs (France / Italy), Temp'ora (France), Access Contemporary Music (USA), Society of Composers (USA). Some of his works were released by Navona Records / Parma Recordings (USA), Ablaze Records (USA), Col Legno (Austria) (digital release), Stan Music (Germany) and Blowout Records (Italy). Gabriel Mălăncioiu is currently teaching Composition Techniques, Orchestration and Musical Analysis at the West University of Timişoara, Faculty of Music and Theatre.
